Have you ever wished you could "see" if all that thereof stuff and breathing stuff worked? Ever get sick be being told, just relax....breathe.........
Well, Neurofeedback may be for you. Many people experience coping skills or mediation as non productive because they have NO WAY of knowing if it is helping!
Neurofeedback is a fun, interactive, non-invasive, medication-free treatment that helps you strengthen and retrain your brain to achieve a healthier, more focused state.
Brain waves are the rhythmic electrical impulses generated when the millions and millions of neurons inside your head communicate with each other. Brain waves can reveal important information about your overall brain function, including stress levels, thought patterns, and emotions. Neurofeedback, involves utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain wave activity. In order to help balance and optimize the brain, neurofeedback uses advanced computer technology to assess brain wave activity in real time.
Biofeedback is a mind-body technique that involves using visual or auditory feedback to gain control over involuntary bodily functions such as blood flow, blood pressure, and heart rate.
These techniques may be used to help alleviate symptoms of conditions including high blood pressure, chronic stress, inflammation, depression, PTSD, headaches, pain, and anxiety (of course many more conditions too, but our fingers are tired!) Biofeedback teaches people to recognize the physical signs and symptoms such as increased heart rate, body temperature, and muscle tension. Scientists believe that it is often the stress response, the body's tendency to go into a state of fight or flight in order to deal with potential threats, that often exacerbate certain conditions.
Sooo......what does it look like?
At our clinic we use a few different systems of biofeedback and neurofeedback. Each is tailored to you a a client and based on your history and presenting concern. We pair our programs with counseling to support healthy change across your life when clinically indicated. We have both active (ya gotta DO something) and passive systems (relax, we got you) to assist in changes. No Shocks to your brain, nothing injected, only monitoring and adjusting programs to maximize your results.
With neurofeedback, YOU become an active participant in healing and optimizing your own brain. You will play a video game using just your brain—it’s fun! Here’s how it works: sensors are placed on your scalp to measure electrical activity in your brain. Then, you will play some games using your mind to exercise control over what is happening on a computer screen. A clinician will show you how to interpret the real-time displays so that you can learn how to regulate your brain!
When your brain performs the way it’s supposed to, the computer program gives you on-screen rewards. But if you get distracted, the computer responds by letting you know that you need to readjust your focus. With a little practice, you can learn how to control your brain activity and replicate the patterns that are most helpful for brain health and growth.
What do I have to do?
Very little! We ask that you show up and participate. There is also a teensy bit of homework at times to help install and maintain changes. Homework is all about ways to improve your brain and life. That's the goal , right? Healthy Balanced Brain, Healthy Happier Life! Neurofeedback takes advantage of the brain’s ability to change itself through a process known as Neuroplasticity. It utilizes the same learning process that occurs whenever we acquire a new skill.
The brain learns by forming connections between nerve cells and utilizing important pathways that connect different locations in the brain. The more frequently you utilize these pathways the better the brain becomes at performing the associated task. In psychology, this type of leaning is called “Operant Conditioning”. It is a type of learning in which responses come to be controlled by their consequences.
Quite simply, Neurofeedback offers the perfect learning conditions, since it facilitates awareness of when the brain is producing healthier brainwave patterns, provides reinforcement for the positive change and multiple opportunities to provide practice during a training session.
Does my Insurance pay for this?
Unfortunately, No. While your insurance may state that this is a covered service, it is NOT covered for mental health providers or wellness providers, only Doctors and often ONLY in a hospital setting.
